The menstrual cycle is often looked at in women as a general measure of good health. Many lifestyle factors can contribute to an unhealthy menstrual cycle, and in turn an unhealthy woman. Poor diet, obesity, lack of exercise, and high stress all have negative effects on the hormonal balance and energy within a woman’s body. An imbalance or obstruction in the body’s vital energy, or Qi, can have some serious negative effects and lead to increased premenstrual syndrome (PMS) PMS and cramping are generally attributed to an underlying liver imbalance that is based on qi (energy) and blood stagnation. The liver is responsible for balanced circulation throughout the body; cramping pain and PMS are signs that the blood has congealed and qi has become stuck. The primary cause of liver qi and blood stagnation is emotional in nature and is specifically related to the suppression of anger and frustration. When you feel stuck in your life and your creative resources are thwarted, the natural byproducts are anger and frustration.
The continued attachment to these emotions makes us feel stuck on all levels. Thus, the body will mirror to us this stagnation by impairing the circulation of qi and blood through the liver meridian. This, in turn, causes pain, mood swings, and further emotional upset. TCM treatments like acupuncture and moxibustion have been used for centuries to treat all kinds of ailments related to the menstrual cycle. Acupuncture and moxibustion techniques can have a profound effect on hormonal imbalances within the body by restoring harmony and the flow of energy. They can be used to target specific areas of the body where menstrual discomforts are taking place, like the lower abdomen, or target the entire body as a whole and treat not only the physical symptoms of the menstrual cycle and PMS, but also the emotional and psychological symptoms.
Acupuncture for PMS is used to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with PMS. Acupuncture helps us achieve balance and control, comfort and focus, and joy in living. We have a lot of potential in our bodies but at times it can be misguided. The needles are very slender. They are about the thickness of two human hairs. Treatments are always carried out with sterile and disposable needles. They are used once and then discarded. All needles are approved by the FDA. Most insertions are just beneath the skin`s surface which enables the skilled acupuncture practitioner to place a needle with little or no sensation. We have great success in helping clients apply acupuncture to help with their PMS.
